Belgrade to press for autonomy for northern Kosovo
Belgrade has said it will press for an autonomy status for northern Kosovo in what is Serbia’s government strategy, the local Evening News newspaper reports with reference to its own sources.
Serbia will thus press for a partition of Kosovo, but is not about to recognize its independence. Belgrade will use this strategy as a basis for all talks for a settlement in Kosovo.
According to the mass media, the document has already been approved by the President and the government, and is due to be submitted to the parliamentary factions and Kosovo Serbs for examination.
The Albanian authorities of Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, relying on support from the United States and the leading European Union nations.
The Albanians make up a majority of the Kosovo population. The tens of thousands of Serbs living in the north of Kosovo and in enclaves reject the independence of Kosovo.
